“Eppure il lutto è stato, fino ai nostri giorni, il dolore per eccellenza, la cui manifestazione era legittima e necessaria”. Lo storico francese Philippe Ariès ha scritto molto sulla morte e sul morire, sulle pratiche luttuose che da sempre accompagnano l’uomo nel suo relazionarsi alla cessazione ultima piena di lacrime e sguardi bassi. Condolersi diventa spesso un impegno dal quale si vorrebbe essere esonerati come da un regalo di nozze troppo costoso, ma il costume occidentale impone partecipazione e costringe al dolore collettivo. Presenziare all’ultimo saluto al “fu” è il leit motiv di nero vestito che immancabilmente ci appare mentre viviamo certi di vivere per sempre. Cozzucoli, per un’immortalità dell’anima che lasciasse giudice il pubblico, ha provato a morire prima che la nera signora pretendesse la sua resa. E’ andato, ha smesso, si è fermato. In occasione della veglia fasulla ha convocato ospiti da eventi espositivi e affetti/effetti personali che ritraessero il suo essere stato. L’arte del morire diventa quindi morire ad arte, morire non in pubblico come per un seppuku da tradizione, ma per il pubblico come esemplificazione di quanto inevitabilmente accadrà. Non esiste spettacolo e non si cerca il disturbo: viene proposto un dialogo che percorre e scopre la necrocultura perché i presenti ne accettino la presenza indipendentemente dalle ufficiali partecipazioni a lutto ricevute per posta. Non sono certo il primo a ricordare che Arte e Morte hanno la stessa desinenza…

The French historian Philippe Ariès has written much on death and dying, on mourning practices that have forever accompanied man in his relating to the ultimate cessation full of tears and downcast looks. Expressing condolences often becomes a task from which we would like to be excused as if from a too costly wedding present, but western tradition imposes participation and obliges to suffer collectively. Being present at the last farewell to the deceased is the leit motif clothed in black that unfailingly appears while we live certain that we will live forever. Cozzucoli, to win an immortality of the soul that would leave the public to judge, has tried to die before the black lady demanded his surrender. He went, gave up, stopped. On occasion of the fake wake he has gathered guests from exhibitional events and personal affects and effects that would portray his having been. The art of dying thus becomes dying artfully, dying not in public as with a traditional seppuku, but for the public to exemplify that which will inevitably happen. It is not a spectacle and no one is trying to disturb: a dialogue is proposed that covers and discovers the necroculture so that those present will accept its presence independently of the official announcement of bereavement received by mail. I certainly am not the first person to point out that Arte (Art) and Morte (Death) have the same extension………
