Francesco Stefanini

FRANCESCO STEFANINI

Rural landscapes, urban landscapes, sunny forests, the triumph of nature are the prime components of the work of this mature and conscious artist. Stefanini is a painter in the purest sense of the word. There are no contaminations, no interferences, neither of material nor of technique, in his work. Everything proceeds in the most academic and orthodox sense of the expression: painting. But how does this artist paint? He paints like one who has always done it and does it as an existential need equal to drinking, eating, breathing. Many are the directions he undertook as a youth, as many are the journeys that have contributed to his formation. I have met the artist in person during a collective exhibition: The eulogy of pastel, and the encounter with his works has conquered me instantaneously and forever. So landscapes are the subjects of his paintings, not however a precise and photographic description of a foreshortening, but the light that showers and envelops everything. Confronting the theme of light in art history we can recognize how much it has been investigated and developed during the centuries, Stefanini has gone beyond because he hasn’t only studied it and introduced it as an accessory to the other elements of his work but he has painted it as if it was the only protagonist. The color of light is all the colors of the rainbow, the light dresses itself and disguises itself with the color of that which it touches, like a chameleon mimes itself and blends in, it jumps out unexpectedly or hides, waiting to be discovered.

Through these canvases we discover the forest of Montello where the artist lives and works, we get to know the atmosphere of these places, its colors in the changing seasons and hours of the day, we see them at night with the moon and in full daylight with the sun at its apex or in the pouring rain, we catch its climate, the humidity, the odor, the perfume of its fruits, the noise of all the creatures that live there. The story of the life of the Ukrainian sculptor Archipenko comes to my mind, who they say sculpted the voids, the absence of matter between elements that meet each other, as the design circumscribed by the void that we obtain putting two vases next to one another, and I think that Stefanini has succeeded to do this with his painting: fill the impalpable void that there is between elements, the minimal or infinite spaces between objects, things, persons, trees, worlds, lives.
